A Story of Faith Learning and Community
Nestled in the townland of Ballymaghery, just outside the village of Hilltown on the Castlewellan Road and overlooking the nearby River Bann, St Patrick’s Primary School has been at the heart of parish life for well over 160 years.
Education has been rooted on this site since 1857, when Rev. John McLeigh PP established separate schools for boys and girls. Those early beginnings laid the foundations for generations of children to grow in faith, learning and friendship.
The present St Patrick’s Primary School opened in 1966 and, in 2026, the school proudly celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Over the decades, the school has continued to evolve to meet the needs of its growing community. What began as a seven-classroom school has expanded through a series of developments and improvements, including additional classrooms, specialist learning spaces, enhanced outdoor facilities and modern teaching resources. Today, the school provides a vibrant and welcoming environment where children can learn, play and flourish.
A Thriving School Community
St Patrick’s is a Catholic Maintained primary school serving boys and girls from four to eleven years of age. With more than 300 pupils, it remains a place where every child is known, valued and encouraged to achieve their personal best.
At the heart of school life is a clear vision: to provide every child with the opportunity to be the best they can be. This vision guides everything the school does, ensuring that every pupil is supported to grow academically, spiritually, socially and emotionally.
The school’s values of being respectful, inclusive, caring and hardworking are woven throughout daily life. Pupils are encouraged to treat others with kindness and respect, celebrate the unique gifts of every individual, work diligently to achieve their goals and contribute positively to the school and wider community.
The school enjoys excellent facilities, including spacious classrooms, a library, sensory room, multipurpose learning areas and extensive outdoor spaces. A particular feature is the school’s sensory garden, affectionately known as the Mindful Meadow, which offers children opportunities to learn about and appreciate the natural world.
Faith at the Heart of School Life
The Catholic faith is central to everything that happens at St Patrick’s. The partnership between home, school and parish helps children develop spiritually while fostering respect, kindness and compassion towards others.
Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation forms an important part of the children’s journey through the school. The school year begins and ends with Mass, while annual celebrations such as the Carol Service bring together pupils, families and parishioners in prayer and worship.
The school is truly grateful for the support and guidance of Parish Priest Fr Charles Byrne and Deacon Gerry McBrien in helping us teach the Gospel message.
The school choir plays a valued role in many religious celebrations, reflecting the strong relationship that exists between the parish and school communities. Through these shared experiences, children learn not only about their faith but also about their responsibility to care for others and contribute positively to society.
Excellence in Learning
Dedicated staff work tirelessly to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that enables every child to develop academically, socially and emotionally. Careful planning and assessment ensure that pupils are supported and challenged according to their individual abilities and interests.
Alongside academic achievement, the school places great importance on developing confidence, resilience and a love of learning. Children are encouraged to recognise their own gifts and talents while respecting the unique qualities of others.
Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
Life at St Patrick’s extends far beyond the school day. Pupils enjoy a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, including Gaelic games, camogie, hurling, choir, orchestra, coding, art, dance, tennis, karate and multisports.
Music has long been a source of pride for the school. Generations of pupils have achieved success at local feiseanna and competitions, while many benefit from specialist tuition in a range of instruments and singing. Annual productions, from Nativity plays to school musicals, showcase the creativity and confidence of the children.
Educational visits and experiences outside the classroom enrich learning further, helping pupils connect their studies with the wider world.
Partnership with Families
Parents play a vital role in the life of the school. The active and supportive Friends of St Patrick’s work closely with staff to enhance opportunities for pupils and strengthen the sense of community that has always characterised the school.
Regular communication, curriculum meetings and consultation opportunities ensure that parents remain closely involved in their children’s educational journey.
Looking to the Future
While proud of its rich history and traditions, St Patrick’s Primary School continues to look forward with confidence. Guided by Gospel values and supported by dedicated staff, governors, families and parishioners, the school remains committed to nurturing each child’s spiritual, academic and personal development.
Rooted in its vision to provide every child with the opportunity to be the best they can be, and inspired by its values of being respectful, inclusive, caring and hardworking, St Patrick’s continues to prepare young people not only for the next stage of their education but also for lives of faith, service and contribution within their families, parish and wider community.
For generations, St Patrick’s has been more than simply a school. It has been a place where faith is lived, friendships are formed and young people are prepared for life. As it celebrates its 60th anniversary, the school continues its mission of serving the parish community and helping every child grow in confidence, character and faith.
